Touring Il Duomo, relaxing at a cafe and people watching in the piazzas, shopping in Florence and wine tasting in the Tuscan countryside.

We stayed at Podere di Montecchio outside Florence. It’s a gorgeous rustic villa on a Tuscan hillside with beautiful views of the surrounding valleys. You get your own private apartment and the staff is wonderful….highly recommended!

What are the best places to eat and drink in Tuscany?

We enjoyed eating at IL Fuego in San Gimignano. We were traveling with our family of 15 people and they were able to accommodate us. Many locals were eating there. Nice prices, great local wine, every meal was delicious.

Really enjoyed visiting Voltera. Cute low key town, not crowded, and found a great purse. Also liked shopping in the PAM grocery store to buy snacks, sandwiches from the deli, and Marvis Toothpaste.

Book your stay in a place that offers a swimming pool. We stayed at the Guardastelle a working vineyard one mile from San Gimignano and the swimming pool was our afternoon cooling off priority.

What are the best places to eat and drink in Tuscany?

We stayed near Volterra and it was amazing. There’s a cute restaurant a bit outside of Volterra called Molina D’Era with great food and amazing pizza you can take away!

What are the best things to do in Tuscany?

We visited Agriturismo Diacceroni for a pasta making class and by far it was one of our highlights. We made 3 types of pasta and then the chefs cooked it up and we had it for dinner looking over the Tuscan countryside. It was amazing.

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Tuscany?

We made sure we planned stops that the kids enjoyed as well. We did some wine tours but balanced that with making sure the wineries served food during the tour and juice for the kids. Our pasta making class was at a farm with a park and loads of animals and of course lots of stops for gelato :)

What are the best places to eat and drink in Tuscany?

Dopolavoro La Foce - their tiramisu is divine and such a cute restaurant with a great view across the street. Ristorante San Martino 26 in San Gimignano - the head chef takes care of his customers and the whole staff is so very friendly. The tasting menu is divine. It was an amazing experience. Definitely one of our favorite restaurants of all time. Fredo Gelato in Pienza- best gelato ever!

What are the best things to do in Tuscany?

Pienza! It was such a cute little town with lovely people, wonderful views and amazing gelato and cheese!

What is the best tip for travelling with kids to Tuscany?

Make sure to bring a stroller or carrier so that your baby can nap whenever you’re sightseeing or driving somewhere! Make an itinerary beforehand of activities you might want to do. We saw a city in the morning, checked into our hotel to rest, then saw another city in the evening. It worked out! Just be patient and make sure you’re being flexible with whatever your child needs.

Kristan's Travel Tips for Tuscany

What are the best places to eat and drink in Tuscany?

We love dining at Ristorante Paoli, the oldest restaurant in Florence. The atmosphere is beautiful, the cuisine delicious and the service excellent. Don't miss the porcini fillet or the truffle carbonara. Extra tip: we had the best gelato in San Gimignano at Gelateria Dondoli.

What are the best things to do in Tuscany?

Our favorite stop in Florence was the Duomo and surrounding buildings. We were in constant awe of its beauty and majesty. We opted to climb the duomo to see rooftop views of Florence and that was very special. Outside of Florence we loved going wine tasting in the countryside. We were treated like VIPs at each winery. It was romantic and relaxing.

What is the best tip for celebrating your anniversary in Tuscany?

Hire a travel agency! We had an agency book this trip for us and it made all the difference. Every hotel had Prosecco waiting for us in our complimentary upgraded rooms. Also, book time to explore on your own. Having tours and planned-out days were lovely, but we found the most romance when we had a free day to explore and allow for spontaneity.

What is your best overall travel tip for Tuscany?

If you're driving from Florence to San Gimigano be sure to pop into the Antinori Winery. It's just 5 minutes off the main highway. No tour needed. The building alone is worth the stop. In contrast to the opulent medieval buildings in the hill town, the winery is an innovative work of modern architecture that blends seamlessly with the landscape. Be sure to leave time for a drink on the gorgeous garden rooftop.
