Dory Deli on Oceanfront near 22nd street. Our beach house was just a block and a half from here and we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner here over the course of a few days. So easy, good food (and coffee!), and reasonably priced!
We spent a couple of LONG days at disney land, and recovered on the beach! There is a fun playground near the lighthouse on the marina side of balboa peninsula that my children adored.
If you rent a beach house, most will already have a good collection of beach toys, boards and umbrellas ready to use. Be sure to scope out what is available at your house before ordering anything. While we didn't cook much while at the house, having a refrigerator and an oven to reheat leftovers is really helpful when you travel with kids!
