How did you meet?

What is your love story?

I knew we were made for each other early in our relationship even though I took 10 years to pop the question. I like to tell the story of when I first met Kyle’s family and felt the love they shared and how it would eventually complete parts of me I didn't know were missing. As we grew together and built a life, this only became more obvious and true; after a decade and two kids, I knew it was time to close the circle and wrap my arms around our family forever.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Montreal has always been our favourite city. I wanted to make our fond memories of it last a lifetime by giving us a reason to think of it and talk about it with our kids. The proposal story marks an important moment in our lives that will forever tie us to a place we love, where we can celebrate our love for each other. Even I didn’t expect that marriage would become important to me in our relationship the way I had always downplayed it over the years, so I tried to make it “thoughtfully casual” and so many things fell into place. It wasn’t hard to convince Kyle to stop by his favourite café in the city and I just had to pop the question with what I hoped would be an obvious answer in front of the “Pourquoi Pas?” sign. “Bien sûr,” he said, to “la grande demande.”

What is your proposal story?

Leading up to New Year’s Eve, I gave Kyle a stack of “I love you” cards sealed in envelopes, with reasons numbered from 34 to 1. It felt like a sign that Kyle was in his 34th year (his lucky number) for 34 more days exactly, from our November 28th 10-year anniversary. The card countdown ended with “I love… that I get to call you my fiancé,” opened on the evening of the surprise proposal. Fortunately for me, he said yes — actually he said “of course,” which made me even happier to see all my planning come to perfect fruition. The day after, on New Year’s Day, I surprised him with a box of new envelopes labeled “100 more,” which started with “I love… that people will say ‘It’s about time’ and they will be right.” With it, I gave him a pair of beautiful silver wristwatches (one for each of us) to commemorate our 10 years’ time and our future hours, days, months, and years to look forward to.

Best tip for proposing in Montreal

There is no need to stick to just one area of the city. Many people consider Old Montreal to be the most romantic, but there are so many other neighbourhoods, murals, public art installations, and that make interesting backgrounds. Go for variety and let your photographer get creative along with you. Trust the process. Now is not the time to start your Bridezilla/Groomzilla journey! (Haha)

I knew she was the one because for the first time ever, I truly felt seen and loved unconditionally. My family loves her for me. We have similar values and goals in life. We also have trust and communicate very well.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

It felt right. I originally planned to propose in our home city, but proposing on this trip just felt right!

What is your proposal story?

It was time for a vacation! So, I chose Montreal since we both have never been. I told her that I arranged for us to have a vacation photoshoot while we were there. I paid for her to have her hair, nails, and make up done because I knew that she would want to look her best. Then I surprised with the proposal during the photoshoot.

Dress for the weather and be patient in high traffic areas.

What is your love story?

When she first met my mom for dinner and I was overcome with this visceral sense of joy.

What made you choose this proposal destination?

Montréal just seemed like a gorgeous and romantic city, that we’d always wanted to visit. Our trip there just seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

What is your proposal story?

I made reservations at a nice restaurant nearby and told her it’d be nice to go on a walk through old Montreal beforehand. On that walk I popped the question :)

Best tip for proposing in Montreal

Be aware of where the construction will be and where the tourists will be! Some truly gorgeous places are likely to either be under construction or very crowded during the summer.
