It's hard to pick just one, because every meal we had in Lyon was stellar. But my favorite was Bouchon Les Lyonnais. We stopped by for dinner right when they opened their doors and managed to snag a table -- previous nights we'd walked by, it was packed with a long waiting line, so I recommend reserving a table or getting there shortly before doors open. Everything from the decor, to the warm, friendly staff was impeccable. Our food -- traditional Lyonnaise fare -- arrived promptly after ordering and it was delicious, as was the dessert.
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is a must-visit if you love food! There are restaurants to sit down and eat, but the real gems are the food vendors selling everything from fresh pastries and cheese, to meats, seafood, and more. Very photogenic, but also bring a shopping bag to stock up on pretty and delicious food. Also loved the Parc de la Tete d'Or, which has a free zoo, botantical garden, big playgrounds, rose garden, and open green space in it.
Smaller and slower paced compared to Paris, Lyon seemed like a "hidden gem" destination that was perfect for our family of 3. Every eatery we visited was family friendly, and we found lots of parks and playgrounds for our 3 year old son to visit. It was also great for the grandparents to meet us here and go on excursions with us. Highly recommend Lyon over Paris if traveling with small children.
When in Lyon, one must try traditional Lyonnaise cuisine; I would recommend Le Jura and Le Tire Bouchon. L'Ange di Vin has excellent wine selection and really friendly service.
1. If you plan to rent a car, use the many conveniently located underground parking. They're very secure and reasonably priced. There may be street parking but the rules are very confusing, plus it's impossible to tell if a spot is legal or not (for example, locals park on sidewalks, which we're not sure if it's actually okay). 2. The good restaurants fill up quickly! So do research ahead of time and try to make reservations. If you don't speak French, maybe make a list of restaurants you're interested, then ask the concierge at your accomodation to make reservations for you.
