Start by heading to one of Lisbon’s most beautiful viewpoints – Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. Because of its vantage point, getting there is quite a hike, so either fuel up with a few pastéis de nata, delicious Portuguese egg tarts, or catch a cab to the top.
Next, head to the medieval São Jorge Castle to explore the castle’s 11 towers, as well as to take in a healthy dose of Lisbon’s history in the permanent exhibition housed there. On the way, be sure to look out for Portugal’s famous azulejos, traditional colourful painted tiles. Meander the castle’s surrounding gardens and check out the camera obscura for a unique view of the city. Purchase tickets in advance to avoid long lines and save those precious minutes for more fun activities!

Post-castle, it’s time to wander down to the Alfama district, a gorgeous seemingly untouched neighbourhood perfect for really taking in Lisbon’s vibe. Better yet, take a walking tour led by a local expert who can fill you in on Lisbon’s fascinating history and show you all those hidden side streets you might otherwise miss.

From here, hop aboard Lisbon’s public transportation system and make your way to Time Out Market for lunch, a vibrant marketplace buzzing with fresh produce, innovative prepared food, cute shops and a music venue. It’s lunch, yes, but it’s also an experience. Be sure to check out the market’s packed academy schedule, where you can learn to whip up something in the kitchen like a pro. They offer plenty of classes for kids, too!

Walk off all that delicious food with a trek to the Santa Justa Elevator, a beautiful example of Neo-Gothic architecture originally built to connect the lowest and highest parts of the city. The panoramic views from the top are unbeatable.

Unwind at the end of the day with a sunset boat tour on the Tagus River. Marlin Tours offers both public and private sunset tours, complete with a glass of wine for the adults. Belém is an obvious choice to finish the day as you’ll be able to take in the sights while resting your feet after a long day of exploring Lisbon’s charm.

Finish the evening with a comprehensive wine tasting…and a healthy portion of tapas, of course. Cais do Vinho Wine Bar offers a wine tasting that explores the nuances of Portugal’s wine regions. Put that new knowledge to good use by selecting a bottle of wine to take home as a little reminder of the lovely city of Lisbon.
