Barcelona
It’s no surprise that this lively city knows how to party, and from September 20th-24th, the city comes together to celebrate La Mercé – a festival held in honour of the Patron Saint of Barcelona. Sparks literally fly at the Correfoc (“fire run”) when powerful sparklers and fireworks are sprayed overhead, or watch the Giants parade where larger-than-life figures of kings, queens and nobles march down the streets to the beat of percussion groups. However, you’ll find quieter streets and cheaper accomodation during the rest of the month in shoulder season, making it the perfect time to explore spots like la Sagrada Família and the Gothic Quarter at your own pace.
Marrakesh
One of North Africa’s most fascinating cities is a dazzling combination of energetic markets, colourful – and pungent! – tanneries, and enchanting hidden riads. While the summer months are blindingly hot, the city begins to cool as September rolls around. It’s still warm enough for a relaxing day by the pool or beach, but cool enough to spend an afternoon wandering through the bustling medina.
Cusco
The oldest inhabited city in the Americas is overflowing with culture, and don’t be surprised if you meet a friendly llama or two as you wander the cobblestoned streets! With the last days of September marking the end of the dry season, it’s the perfect window to lace up your hiking boots and trek to the famous Lost City of the Incas. Hidden amongst the Peruvian Andes, Machu Picchu is a legendary site unknown to outsiders until just 100 years ago, and experiencing this truly unique wonder of the world should definitely be on your bucket list.
Sydney
Those who truly want to forget about the quickly approaching autumn can head down under to Sydney, where you’ll find blooming flowers and the sweet smell of springtime. Take a short 1.5 hour drive to Bowral for the annual Tulip Time Festival, and frolic among 75,000 tulips for the perfect Instagram shot. The mild temperatures are perfect for spending all day exploring the city, from lounging at Bondi Beach to picnics at the Sydney Opera House. Hop from rooftop bar to rooftop bar at sunset for stunning and romantic views of the Sydney Harbour.
Palermo
While everyone seems to have places like the dazzling Amalfi Coast, Florence and Venice on their bucket lists, the island of Sicily still feels like a wonderful secret hidden in the Mediterranean Sea. Its coastal atmosphere, feisty culture and stellar nightlife instantly makes the newest visitor feel like an old friend. To experience more of this beautiful island, take a short train ride to the charming seaside town of Cefalú, and the perfect September weather will invite you to lounge on the beach all day long
