1. Flinders Street Station

Anyone who’s not been to Melbourne before might find it tough to pick out some iconic buildings. But we’re here to tell you that none are quite as iconic as Flinders Street Station. This is one of Australia’s most recognizable spots. Its stunning architecture and bustling surroundings make it one of the perfect places to take photos in Melbourne. 🚉

The intricate details of this historic railway station provide a rich backdrop for both candid and posed shots. Flinders Street Station really comes alive when daylight fades. Its state-of-the-art lighting system brings a whole new depth of shadows and offers the ideal location for light and nighttime photography. The contrast between night and day is something not to be missed.

TOP TIP: Enjoy more architecture and colourful street art with a walk along Flinders Street & Hosier Lane.

2. Hosier Lane

Melbourne is filled with little laneways covered in graffiti and urban street art, but none are quite as remarkable as Hosier Lane. This ever-changing canvas makes for a dynamic and colourful backdrop for your photos. There is no specific spot that’s best, so pick the place you like the most and get snapping! 🖼️

Each visit to Hosier Lane reveals new artwork, ensuring that no two photos you take are alike. And if you want to find more street art covering every surface possible, take a detour to Rutledge Lane (the Sister Gallery). Be sure to visit Hosier Lane early in the morning or late afternoon to miss most of the crowds.

TOP TIP: Looking for more impressive murals, anime stencil work, political art, and colourful graffiti? Check out some of Melbourne’s other street art hotspots including AC/DC Lane, Croft Alley, and Duckboard Place.

3. Princes Pier

One of the best places to take photos in Melbourne is the mesmerizing Princes Pier. This photo spot gives you a glimpse into Melbourne’s maritime history and shows off the remains of a collapsed pier. The old wooden pylons and scenic views of Port Phillip Bay provide a unique setting for your photography session.

This hidden gem comes into its own at sunset when the soft light and golden sky reflect off the water, making it even more mesmerizing. We think it’s one of the most Instagrammable locations you’ll find in Australia. Whether you’re looking to capture the sunset or show off the site’s rustic charm, you’re bound to capture some everlasting memories here. 🌇

TOP TIP: Fancy trying your hand at some filming? Come down to Princes Pier during golden hour with a wide-angle lens and set a timelapse for some truly magical memories as the sky and water change colour. 🎥

4. St Kilda Pier & Beach

St Kilda Pier is widely known for its colony of little penguins. The isolation of the breakwater makes it the ideal location for these beautiful animals to live. Be sure to come to St Kilda just before dusk and watch as the colony comes ashore from the promenade. You might just get to capture some pictures with these beautiful birds. But remember: no flash photography or touching! 🐧

While the penguins are one major attraction of this photography location, it’s also one of the best places to take photos in Melbourne for capturing views of the city skyline. St Kilda Pier & Beach is one of our favourite places, as you can capture beautiful candid shots of you and your loved ones playing on the sandy shores or posing in the water with the waves lapping at your feet. 🌊

If you want to view more stunning sunsets, this is a great spot to be. You’ll see the golden reflections from the windows of buildings making up the city skyline, as well as the warming hues reflected off the water.

TOP TIP: Use the sunset to capture you and your loved ones in silhouette for some creative Instagrammable pics. Strike different poses and have a laugh. We’d love to see what you can create.

5. The Carlton Gardens

Nestled within the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the Carlton Gardens offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city centre. Home to the Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum, this lush green space is a haven for nature photographers and travellers alike. 🏞️

While you’re here, bring a picnic and take a walk among the flower beds, ornamental lakes and fountains, and European trees. A major highlight of the Carlton Gardens is the Victorian-era Hochgurtel Fountain and its two ornamental lakes, which offer perfect backdrops and stunning places to take photos in Melbourne. ⛲

As you’re already in Melbourne’s CBD, you might as well use this opportunity to see some of the other photo spots, such as the Princes Bridge over the Yarra River. The Princes Bridge is one of the busiest footpaths in Melbourne, and once you’re there gazing back towards Melbourne city centre from the edge of the bridge, you’ll know why. The city skyline is a spectacular sight from the south bank of the river. 🌃

TOP TIP: While in the Carlton Gardens, take your children to the playground or basketball court or book a tennis court at the Carlton Gardens Tennis Club and grab some action shots as they let off steam.
