Harbour Island Photo Spots

Harbour Island, or “Briland” as it’s known to the islanders who call it home, is arguably the prettiest island in The Bahamas and maybe in the entire Caribbean! Located not even two miles away from north Eleuthera, the island is only about 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. It’s home to 18th-century, New England-style houses painted in watercolour pastels with white picket fences that ring a turquoise bay full of yachts and working boats. Known for its famous pink sand beach, gentle water, snorkelling, and some of the best restaurants The Bahamas have to offer (from fine dining to local Bahamian fare), this island getaway‌ has it all. So, where are the best places to take photos on Harbour Island? Let’s find out! 🏝️

1. Dunmore Town

Dunmore Town is one of the oldest settlements in The Bahamas, dating back to the 18th century. It was once the capital and second only to Nassau in significance.

This quaint little village is full of hilly, narrow streets lined with pastel, New England-style houses available to rent or buy. This includes The Dunmore—a stylish, 10-acre tropical refuge of oceanfront homes and guest cottages. Once an invitation-only beach club, it’s no wonder that it radiates 1960s-resort glitz and glam. Talk about a photo op! ✨

Dunmore Town is also full of phenomenal restaurants, such as The Dunmore Restaurant, Arthur’s Bakery, and Queen Conch. Somewhere along the way, be sure to order a conch salad. Full of fresh tomatoes, onion, and lime, it’s known as the ceviche of The Bahamas. 🍅🧅

2. Pink Sand Beach

As opposed to the classic white sand beaches, this iconic beach has about 3 miles of picturesque, hard-packed pink sand that runs the entire length of the eastern side of the island. The pink sand is composed of bits of minuscule rocks, broken shells, bits of coral, and calcium carbonate from teeny-tiny marine invertebrates—microscopic, shelled, single-celled animals called Benthic Foraminifera, or protozoa, that get washed up on shore by the waves. 🌊 The sand feels silky smooth underfoot and is nicely packed, which makes it perfect for a walk along the beach you’re not likely to forget. (And how could you after taking so many fabulous Instagrammable pics!)

But aside from the famous sand, the crystal-clear water is warm and gentle thanks to the outlying reefs, which makes swimming and snorkelling a dream. You’ll find plenty of places to charter or rent boats, as well as diving and fishing gear rentals. If that’s not enough, you can also go horseback riding along the pink sand! 🐎💗

3. Lava Rock Point

Lava Rock Point is a must-see spot on the northern tip of the island made up of unique black lava rock formations caused by ancient volcanic activity. The striking contrast of the dark rocks against the turquoise water makes this a fabulous spot for photos. There’s a lot of unique marine life around the rocks, but the area is known for strong currents, so use caution if swimming, snorkeling, or diving. Also, be sure to wear appropriate footwear (i.e., no flip-flops!) because the rocks may be sharp.

There aren’t any facilities nearby, so you’ll have to pack your own food and drinks. But the small beach next to the lava rocks makes for a wonderful picnic spot where you can kick back, get some sun, and listen to the soft sounds of the waves. 🖤🌊

4. Bay Street

Bay Street is the island’s main street. It hugs the western shore along Dunmore Town on the Bay side of Harbour Island and is home to many fine, five-star boutique hotels as well as historical sites, such as Dunmore Cottage (the summer home of Lord Dunmore, former Governor of The Bahamas and founder of Dunmore Town), The Sugar Mill (a boutique shop that offers clothing, jewelry, and collectibles), Fig Tree Park, and the Harbour Lounge (a restaurant serving legendary seafood). 🍤🐠 And the best part? You don’t have to walk. You can rent a golf cart, which is actually the preferred method of travel on the island!

5. Tree of Charlotte

The Tree of Charlotte, more commonly known as the Lone Tree, is a large piece of driftwood on the northern shoreline—some say a former pine tree, some say it was an almond tree—that stands completely alone. Said to have arrived and became firmly embedded in the sand during Hurricane Andrew in 1992, it’s now an iconic landmark of Harbour Island and one of its most popular photo destinations. 🏝️

Located just off the shore, the surrounding sand is often full of turquoise water, which creates a nearly mirror-like surface under the tree, making it appear even more mysterious and beautiful than it already is. ❤️
